5 Types of People to Avoid When SHTF

If you're ever in a SHTF (shit hit the fan) or WROL (without rule of law) situation, there are certain types of people you're going to want to stay away from.  You know that old saying "keep your friends close and your enemies closer?" Well it doesn't really apply here.  In an apocalypse scenario, you'll want the bad guys as far away from you as possible.

Here are 5 Types of People to Avoid When SHTF

5. Unstable or Medicated People

People who need to constantly take medication in order to regulate their mental state are not safe to be around. What's going to happen when those meds run out? You've probably seen someone change moods when they weren't medicated. They could mean well but ultimately don't have control over their mental state. Steer clear. (We are talking mentally ill people here, not the ones who can handle skipping anti-anxiety meds).

4. Drug Addicts

Drug addicts are worse than medicated people because they will do whatever it takes to get their next fix.  That includes turning on you. They will be dangerous from withdrawals as well.

3. Criminals and Gangs

Gangs and criminals don't honor a gentleman's bargain and will take what gear you have by force. Including family members. A gang might seem like they'd be good for protection, but it's quite the opposite.

2. People Who Don't Prep

These are the people who don't even have a gallon of water stored if SHTF. They probably even make fun of you on Facebook for sharing articles like this. Leave them, they are dead weight and will do stupid things when they become desperate.

1. Government Agencies

Be leery of government agencies telling you to trust them and that everything will be OK. They might just need your resources to feed their own numbers.

Who are you staying away from when SHTF?

It will be hard to leave anyone in your own family behind. I doubt I would do so, regardless of whether I think they will be useful to my group. This kind of decisions will make life very difficult for many of us when/if the SHTF. But if people in the groups you mention here are not part of my family, I won’t feel guilty about leaving them to pay the price of what in most cases, is their earlier wrong choices.

But I do have another class of people who all things being equal, I do not want along. That is people who insist on bringing along sick cats, small yapping dogs and other useless pets that they love above people and maybe even themselves. Even people who look like liabilities at first may later favorably surprise us, but animals that could spread diseases within the group or give away where we are by making a lot of noise for no reason, are a giant blob of red ink on the group’s balance sheet. If their human caretakers cannot ditch these useless beasts, then they can stay behind and take their chances with them.

Also +1 for Steve Watts. No fatties… Please, for the love of God, get in shape if you’re serious about this.

Why is what Hondo said a big deal?

Unless a person who needs meds was close to me, it all sounds pretty sound. No druggies, nobody who was too dumb to prepare, including cops. Right there with you buddy.

I have a sixth person I would stay away from and specifically that is the type of person Hondo has shown himself to be with his comments.
Hondo sounds exactly like Adolf Hitler – probably a Hitler lover – and company therefore I would stay as far away from him as possible.
I wouldn’t even want to render him for fat or lean meat because it would be as toxic as his words.

Hondo, I think you’d be surprised by just how many people in this top 5 list have been responsible for creating/inventing/mainstreaming things that you take for granted in your every day life. I would suggest that the top people to avoid are very simply: “Anyone that demonstrates routinely erratic or excessively sociopathic habits/mind set”. That pretty neatly includes Addicts, People with significant mental health issues, people without preparation/training, gangs, etc. It also neatly includes anyone that would promote getting into needless/pointless/excessive altercations due to the idea of Might makes Right, or due to bigotry. As always, its not always easy to spot people that in these risk groups and usually requires some exposure/time spent with them. So, no matter how well you think you might know your partners/companions… it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on them. Partly because you never really know people as well as you think you do, and party because peoples mindsets/attitudes can shift and change over time, particularly in high stress/SHTF situations.
